School Lunch Hero Day
Food $ense joined our school nutrition partners in celebrating School Lunch Hero Day on May 1st. School Lunch Hero Day was created to recognize that school nutrition professionals make a difference in the lives of every student that comes through their line. School nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate, making sure our kids get a healthy meal on theirs! With duties that often include early mornings, navigating school nutrition standards and student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, our school nutrition employees are definitely heroes!
Brown Bag it and Save
For those of us who don’t eat in a school lunchroom every day, the question is often whether to bring a lunch from home or eat out. Did you know that packing a lunch from home instead of buying lunch could save over $500 a year? Let’s say you eat out for lunch twice a week, and the average cost of your meal and beverage is $6. That means $12 a week, or $624 a year spent on lunch at a restaurant or vending machine.
Eating Smart, Being Active Groups Cross the Finish Line
“I enjoyed the class, and now I’m making healthier food choices, starting to exercise a lot more and I have a lot more energy.” -Participant from Eating Smart, Being Active group at NeighborCare Rainier Beach Clinic.
Over the past month, F$ has completed three series of our Eating Smart, Being Active classes for adults hosted by some of our wonderful partner agencies. Each series of Eating Smart, Being Active classes meets once a week for an hour and a half for eight weeks. The classes are built around group discussions of a variety of nutrition and healthy living topics, ranging from making affordable, healthy choices in all food groups to fun and easy ways to be physically active at every stage of life.
Recipe of the Month
This recipe was chosen by the Eating Smart, Being Active group at Easternwood Cooperative Apartments for their final class last month. It also makes a great planned-over lunch entree!
