This year, World Health Day was celebrated on April 7th. This special day highlights the challenges and opportunities associated with food safety on a global scale. The World Health Organization (WHO) dedicated the annual day of awareness to the issue of food safety under the slogan “From farm to plate, make food safe.” WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan says, “Food production has been industrialized and its trade and distribution have been globalized. These changes introduce multiple new opportunities for food to become contaminated with harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemicals.” Dr Chan adds: “A local food safety problem can rapidly become an international emergency.”
Food $ense Educators joined Soos Creek Elementary in the Kent School District with a school-wide Health Fair during two days in March. Instead of participating in their usual PE class, students enjoyed activities provided by various community partners.
Every day, Food $ense (F$) educators are out and about in your community in a variety of venues. When our educators visit locations such as schools, food banks, affordable housing sites, and health centers to share their knowledge about eating healthy on a budget, they are often asked about food resources such as Basic Food (SNAP), WIC, and more. In order to equip our staff and participants with more information about these resources, we have begun partnering with WithinReach.
Spring has sprung! Try this recipe with asparagus, which is in season April through June here in Washington. Using produce in season means it is often fresher, more affordable, and tastier.
